Abstract

Experimental trials are underway to propagate endemic species for food production and stock enhancement of freshwater finfish endemic to lakes and estuarine coves. Among these, the challenge is to breed the silver perch or "ayungin" (Leiotherapon plumbeus) and the flathead goby or "biyang puti" (Glossogobius giuris) to determine its viability for propagation under fish pond and fish cage structures. The studies were funded by DA-BAR in April 16, 2015 under BARQSF-A.01.02. Two fisheries centers were tapped to jointly undertake the studies: the University of the Philippines Los Banos' (UPLB) Limnological Research Center (LRC) in Los Banos, Laguna and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' (BFAR) National Inland Fisheries Technology Center (NIFTC) in Tanay, Rizal.
