    NFRDI mentored 17 interns

    Despite the pandemic, 17 interns were accepted by the DA-NFRDI to help them transition from college students into future professionals. Four of the said interns were assigned to the Aquaculture Research and Development Division, five in Integrated Research Laboratory, and eight in Fisheries Biotechnology Center, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Christopher C. Rayos, Mr. Karl Bryan Perelonia, and Dr. Casiano H. Choresca, respectively.

    Philippine's poster recognized as one of the outstanding posters in the GCA +20

    The paper "Efficacy of tilapia oral vaccine coupled with nanocomposite biomaterial as carrier for vaccine delivery" by Dr. Mary Nia M. Santos, Head of Aquatic Animal Health Section, Aquaculture Research Development Division, was selected as one of the outstanding posters during the Global Conference on Aquaculture Millenium =20 (GCA+20) held on 22-25 September 2021.

    Backyard ornamental fish production technology to boost fish industry

    DA-NFRDI promoted the technology on backyard ornamental fish production in collaboration with BFAR during its project launching at Brgy. San Jose, Tanauan City on August 5, 2021. As a result, 20 cooperator-beneficiaries in Batangas, Laguna, and Quezon were profiled and selected as recipients of agricultural inputs to help boost this particular industry.

    Solo parent's welfare act of 2000:

    The 4-hour webinar talked about the topics that wer divided into three sessions: (1) the need for the solo parent act; (2) orientation on the Salient Provisions of Republic Act 8972; and (3) a glimpse on the CSC Memorandum Circular Implementing RA 8972. This achieves the activity's objectives to provide information on comprehensive programs and services for solo parents and to understand their needs.

    The National Stock Assessment Program in the 3rd quarter of FY 2021

    This quarter, the NSAP positively strengthened its collaboration and engagement with the international research insitutes such as the US- Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and Asia SEAFDEC on technical training and joint research. The team has conducted NSAP technical and administrative meetings, including preparations on NSAP Interactive Web App preparatory. In addition, meetings were attended regarding Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs), Management Board (MB), Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), and NSAP Interactive atlas, among others.

    Aquatic wildlife training conducted

    The Capture Fisheries Research and Development Division, together with the Training Division, spearheaded the conduct of Training/Workshop on Aquatic Wildlife Laws and Treaties and Basic Identification of Prohibited and Regulated Aquatic Species last August 23-28, 2021. The training aimed to gived 38 NFRDI personnel knowledge of the aquatic wildlife laws and regulations under R.A. 9174 and its IRR FAO 233, the Aquatic Wildlife Conservation, and international laws on wildlife such as CITES and IUCN. Also, it aimed to capacitate participants on the taxonomy and identification of prohibited and endangered species.

    B-Net POMPOMS: Promising for enhanced survival of mangrove crabs

    Crab shelters made of B-net pompoms were observed to be effective in enhancing the survival of mangrove crabs according to the initial results of the study jointly conducted by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute-Brackishwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-BFRDC) and the BFAR-National Center in Pagbilao, Quezon. The nursery rearing technology and protocols that SEAFDEC-AQD has initially proven are currently being tested for their suitability for mangrove crab nurseries reared in net cages in brackishwater ponds at Lala, Lanao del Norte.

    Second batch of maliputo fishfarmer cooperators starts rearing maliputo as their livelihood

    In its second year of implementation, the NFRDI R&D project of Freshwater Research and Development Center (FFRDC) on "Technology Promotion of the Grow-out Culture of Maliputo" selected another 30 cooperatir-beneficiaries drom Lemery, Taal, and San Luis, Batangas. The project aims to provide additional income to local fisherfolk by promoting grow-out culture technology of maliputo - a highly-prized food fish in the area.

    Webinar on climate change and its impact on Philippine ocean fisheries

    NFRDI, in partnership with the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI), organized a webinar on Climate Change and its impact on ocean fisheries: Philippines on September 15, 2021 via Zoom and through Facebook Live Stream. Dr. Laura T. David, Director of the UP MSI and Dr. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, Scientist IV and Chief of NFRDI's Training Division, served as the resource speakers. The topics of their discussion were "Pagtugon sa Kalam ng Tiyan, Kabuhayan, at Kaligtasan"and "Nagbabagang Panahon: Epekto sa Pangisdaan at Yamang Tubig ng Pilipinas," respectively. This webinar aims to focus on the prevailing concept of climate change and its lingering effect on the ocean fisheries in the Philippines, particularly on its ecological and economic impacts, as well as the combined efforts of the scientific community and the government to combat the issue.

    Central Luzon provinces consulted and trained on Climate Change vulnerability assessment and mapping

    To know how the fisheries in the provinces of Central Luzon is exposed to climate change, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and training on Fisheries Vulnerability Assessment Tool (Fish Vool) dat validation and mapping was conducted from June 28 to July 16, 2021 by DA-NFRDI in collaboration with BFAR region III.

    We are all responsible for our own spiritual growth. And to grow spiritually, we need the right spiritual food. Unfortunately, many people want to grow spiritually, but they get their food from the wrong sources. So this is a loving reminder: Our souls and spririts will not grow if we fill them with junk foods: junk foods of sins, worldliness, and filthiness and other things that will push us into the grave sins, and eternal death.

    NFRDI conducted the 9th fisheries scientific conference

    September 9, 2021 - The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) conducted its 9th Fisheries Scientific Conference (FishSciCon) on September 1-8, 2021, via virtual platform to promote discussions on different advances in fisheries studies. With the theme, "Pangisdaan ay Paunlarin, Pananaliksik ay Gamitin upang Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita ay Makamit Natin," this year's SciCon aims to provide a venue for national and international researchers, students, and stakeholders in the field of fisheries to present relevant research and advancements towards attaining sustainable fisheries and food security. The conference revolved around four sector sessions: Aquaculture, Capture Fisheries, Fisheries Postharvest, and Cross-Cutting Themes.

    5th national fisheries biotechnology symposium conducted

    On September 29-30, 2021, the 5th National Fisheries Biotechnology Symposium (NBFS) with the theme "Advances and Innovation on Reproductive Biotechnology in Aquaculture and Fisheries" was conducted to highlight the impact of reproductive biotechnology trends and advancements in fisheries and aquaculture in improving productivity, increasing income, and attaining food security in the fisheries sector.
