(National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2021)On September 29-30, 2021, the 5th National Fisheries Biotechnology Symposium (NBFS) with the theme "Advances and Innovation on Reproductive Biotechnology in Aquaculture and Fisheries" was conducted to highlight the impact of reproductive biotechnology trends and advancements in fisheries and aquaculture in improving productivity, increasing income, and attaining food security in the fisheries sector.Item Metadata only Amidst Disasters: Taal Lake Fisheries at PresentDela Cruz, Lea Mae; Santos, Francisco F. (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2020)The Taal volcano eruption last January 2020 has brought various degrees of damage to the lives of Batangueños, especially to those living around the Taal Lake. Almost a year after the disaster and with the COVID-19 pandemic still looming, how are the people and their fisheries livelihood coping? Damaged residences and livelihoods, changed landscape, displaced families−all bear witness to the Taal volcano's fury. As a country sitting on the infamous "Ring of Fire," it has been a way of life for people to live with the threats of natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, a fair share of typhoons, and in rare cases, tsunamis.Item Metadata only Potential spaces for pond propagation under conventional andor organic regimesLedesma, Rene Geraldo Guerrero; Hechanova, Zaldy; Pol, Romualdo; Villanueva, James (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2020)Experimental trials are underway to propagate endemic species for food production and stock enhancement of freshwater finfish endemic to lakes and estuarine coves. Among these, the challenge is to breed the silver perch or "ayungin" (Leiotherapon plumbeus) and the flathead goby or "biyang puti" (Glossogobius giuris) to determine its viability for propagation under fish pond and fish cage structures. The studies were funded by DA-BAR in April 16, 2015 under BARQSF-A.01.02. Two fisheries centers were tapped to jointly undertake the studies: the University of the Philippines Los Banos' (UPLB) Limnological Research Center (LRC) in Los Banos, Laguna and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' (BFAR) National Inland Fisheries Technology Center (NIFTC) in Tanay, Rizal.Item Metadata only The Philippine Journal of Fisheries webinar series: All about Taal Lake fisheries and seafood safety mattersMoncawe, Cyrenes M. (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2020)The Philippine Journal of Fisheries (TPJF) held its first-ever webinar on August 28, 2020, via Zoom, with the theme, "All About Taal Lake Fisheries," focusing on the capture and aquaculture fisheries around the lake. Acting Executive Director Dr. Lilian C. Garcia, CESO V, thought that it is now time for the journal to conduct a webinar series to share research results to a broader audience.
