(National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2021)The very first Virtual Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) was conducted on May 18, 20, and 21, 2021, where 28 employees composed of 57% female and 43% male had participated. This is the first of the two batches for this year. Atty. Mylen Gonzales-Esquivel from the Philippine Commission on Women Gender Resource Pool is the resource person for the training. Manalo and Camille Barbacina received the accolade for being two of the Best MAYA Interns while Lea Ann Jungoy, Geraldine Dionaldo, Ianne Nicole Lobos, Jazel Astronomo, and Armena Gani Aldaya were among the Best in Photo Journey.Item Metadata only A flurry of actions to sustain food security amid COVID-19Alonte, Myrna D. (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2020)When DA Secretary Dr. William Dar called on all DA agencies to refocus programs/activities to sustain food security in the country amid Covid-19, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) was among the agencies that immediately heeded. Soon, 22 refocused projects were approved with a total budget of Php23 million. The refocused projects got the Secretary's nod since these were expected to immediately result in increased fish production for the country. A kilo costs P4,000-P5,000 making it the most expensive fish in the country. It was said to be the favorite of late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, gaining the name "President's Fish".Item Metadata only A smokehouse for smoked fishMuyot, Myla C. (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 2021)The Sampaloc, Talisay Producers Cooperative, a women's group based in Barangay Sampaloc, Talisay, Batangas was identified as one of the program's beneficiaries of Increased Fish Productivity through Technology Promotion and Provision of Agricultural Support to Fisherfolk. The group was established in 2010 with 71 members comprised of 29 males and 42 females. Majority of the members are housewives of fishermen. Their products include smoked, marinated, and bottled fish-all made to order. The group has an existing unit of smokehouse with 60-70 kg bangus capacity which is enough to meet the demands of their clients who require large quantities of the product. They produce around 50-100 packs per week for exporters and wholesalers while only 10-30 packs per week for retailers. They needed a smaller smokehouse to accommodate orders of 20 kg or less of retailers because a large smokehouse entails higher operational costs. Hence, NFRDI-FFRDC provided a smokehouse with 20 kg capacity to support this need.Item Metadata only A thankful heartGarcia, Lilian C. Tomas, La Union, Virgilio Daz, harvested 640 kilos of milkfish grown in brackishwater ponds after a four-month culture period on December 19, 2022.
